Car Rental In Langkawi

"Get A Ride To Explore The Island"

If you plan to see what the island offers, then getting a car rental in Langkawi might be your best option. Bus services are very limited and paying for taxis each time may start to eat into your travel budget.

Having your own ride allows you to visit all parts of the Langkawi without the hassle of trying to find a taxi back. And you can hit the jungle trails at night too.

Try out some of these options for hiring a car rental in Langkawi. You need to call around to find good bargains, usually from local businesses rather than globally recognized rental agencies.

Driving in Langkawi is really easy. There are never any traffic jams and you just have to follow the main roads to reach most nature destinations.

During seasonal and school holidays the island does tend to get crowded and a car rental in Langkawi becomes scarce, so book early.

Car Rental In Langkawi: Traveller Reviews

Here are a few reviews found on the web to give you an idea of what to expect and some good tips on using a rental car in Langkawi.

[Note: Remember that the prices stated may not reflect current rates.]

Car Rental Review #1

"We rented a 1.3 Litre Proton Wira automatic gear transmission AC car with FM radio and costed us RM 60.00 per day. Manual version was available for RM 50.0 per day (Proton Iswara). This was new car, hardly 6 months old and was in excellent condition. We collected the car keys, local Langkawi Road Map.

From the jetty, we just drove down to our Hotel. On the way, we filled 20 Ltrs petrol (worth RM 25.00) at a gas station in Kuah City. Langkawi is a small island and even if you go round the island two times, you would do less than 100 KMs. So 20 ltrs would be sufficient for 3-4 days. Gas stations are clearly marked on the main roads, are plentiful and the above mentioned Map gives indication of all the gas stations in the island. Most of them are open till 2000 hrs.

The road markings are excellent except in few places and its difficult to get lost. People are more than helpful. The roads are smooth, narrow and winding at places but hardly any traffic. It was interesting to see markings on the road to indicate animal crossing and once on our way to Seven Wells waterfalls, we encountered a lot of monkeys crossing the road."

Car Rental Review #2

"Driving in Langkawi is very easy. There is not much traffic on the island and coastal areas. Except in the town area (Kuah). For a whole day of driving, we only had to stop at 2 traffic lights - one in Kuah, and one nearer the jetty area.

We rented an auto Proton Wira (saloon car) for RM130 from the hotel we stayed in. And the rate is for 24 hrs. The map that was provided to us is the same as the one you can get from the Airport. It is not very detailed, but good enough.

One thing you need to look out for are the cows/buffalos/monkeys. The warnings signs are placed near plantations/forested areas, and they are there for a very good reason. When we were driving at night, imagine our shock when we saw a group of 7 to 8 cows (all glistening wet with mud) dashing out from the right side of the road. Luckily I noticed pairs of eyes reflecting our headlights.

Why rent a car?

  • Drive down to Tanjong Rhu, a scenic beach, for a quiet time picking seashells.
  • Visit the 'roaming' night market (check with your hotel for location).
  • Make your way to restaurants.
  • Save on taxi fares.
  • Drive along the coastal areas.
  • Drive to the cable car base station, 7 wells waterfall etc."

Best of all, parking is practically free in many areas !

Car Rental Review #3

"As there is no public transport on the island except cab/taxi, the best way to explore the island is to drive. You can rent a car from the airport, jetty and from most of the resorts. The cost to hire a car is about RM50.

I managed to get a Nissan Sentra for RM80. If you are good at bargaining, you might get a really good price."
