Lata Kinjang Jungle Waterfall

"Take A Scenic Rainforest Break"

A beautiful sight from the North-South expressway, the Lata Kinjang jungle waterfall explodes out of the tropical rainforest. A cascade of pure water drops 800 feet down the mountainside framed by lush green scenery.

One of East Malaysia's tallest waterfalls, more travelers see this natural feature than take the time to visit. It is worth the extra time.

A great place for a family picnic idea or break from driving. Located next to an Orang Asli settlement, there are forest trails and guided overnight excursions to visit the villages near the top of the forest waterfall.

The waterfall pools have plenty of picnic spots and safe swimming areas. Steps lead up the hill for easy access to other sections of the waterfall. A suspension bridge offers fantastic close-up observation and panoramic views of the rainforest canopy. [The safety netting is gone and it is not safe for kids.]

Lata Kinjang Jungle Waterfall: Activities

So what can you do at the Lata Kinjang jungle waterfall?

  • Swim at one of several safe waterfall pools nearby the entrance.
  • Spend a day hiking the jungle trails alongside the waterfall.
  • Take a camera and shoot great rainforest waterfall images.
  • Take the kids or friends for a relaxing outdoor day in the sun and water.
  • Organize an overnight camping trip to a nearby Orang Asli village.

A very popular nature outing, Lata Kinjang is often crowded during the weekends and holidays. Try to visit during the weekdays to avoid the crowds. If you seek a quiet spot, plan to hike a short distance to get away from the main waterfall pools.

Remember that jungle waterfalls are wild places that require using some common sense safety when visiting. Unfortunately, facilities, walkways, and bridges deteriorate fast in jungle weather, so always check their condition for safe use.

Here are some safety suggestions and tips to make your visit a more enjoyable one:

  • Go early to find the perfect location and miss the often late afternoon thunderstorms
  • Always be aware of flash floods, strong currents and unsafe swimming areas.
  • Jungle trails on both sides of the waterfall are steep and often confusing, so be surefooted and watch your step.
  • Reaching the top cascade requires some orienteering skills to find the right trails and location.
  • Try out some jungle photography in the old rubber plantations, hillside forests, riverside trails and scenic waterfall spots.

"This morning, my son brought it to school where he shared it with the other kids prior to first bell. There were 15 nine and ten year olds jockeying for the best view with "cool" and "awesome" said only the way a child can.

They completely missed the sound of the bell and their teacher came out to see what the delay was. She too fell in love and the book stayed at school to be shared with all the [....] classes over the next few days."
